Lilys

I have found that perennials are the best way to go when planting a garden for the future. Planting perennials ensures that your garden will come back year after year.

Here are a few suggestions on perennials that are easy to plant and need little maintenance.

Lilies are one of my favorites. Daylilies, hybrids, and exotics are all wonderful choices for landscaping. They multiply fairly quickly and produce a most fragrant bloom.

There are several varieties and colors to choose from. The most popular being the orange day lily. Known primarily for naturalization. They are easily grown and prone to drought.

Some lilies are more fragrant than others. The Stargazer (pictured below) is extremely fragrant. Unbelievable!

Early Spring Flowers

Tulips, hyacinths, daffodils and crocus are a few of the spring perennials that bloom when it is still cool. They too multiply quite rapidly. They are easily planted and need little care.

Gladiolus come in many varieties and colors. They are maintenance free. Make sure to plant these where they will have room to spread. They are like rabbits when it comes to multiplying. Also, planting them next to something they can lean on helps. They tend to lean over and fall when they get to big and heavy.

Shade

Hostas, astilbes and ferns work well in shade gardens. Hostas can survive in full sun. They will just need more watering than ones in the shade. Astilbes are great in the shade. I found the pink ones are the hardiest and have proven to do quite well even through last years drought. I have hostas in shade and full sun, both do very well in my yard.

Rock Gardens

Ice plants are a great naturalizer. Great for rock gardens! It is a beautiful ground cover. Spreads over time, only gets about 6 - 8 inches high. I started with just a sprig and it has grown to about 2' x 2' area in 2 years. Mine has spread about 6 to 12 inches each year. Prefers full sun. These plants are not meant to endure path traffic. Ice plants have a few colors to choose from, the most popular being the bright almost neon pink.
